Among the different cell types in a plant root, the protophloem is the first lineage to differentiate. After several rounds of cell division, the cells lose most organelles and eventually become the sieve elements of mature phloem.
In my talk, I will introduce you to some of the top-notch live cell imaging of the developing protophloem. I will share with you my discoveries of unique, so far unreported phenomena such as a circular ‘donut’ localization of plasma membrane-resident proteins and the rapid passage (‘hopping’) of cytoskeletal elements and calcium signal from one cell to another. This work is only possible due to advanced microscopy techniques available at the Institute of Experimental Botany AS CR and illustrates the exciting opportunities currently available to Czech science.
