Basic information about our department

The Department of Philosophy and History of Sciences of the Faculty of Science is within the Charles University a uniquely interdisciplinary institute which focuses on theoretical investigation of natural sciences both from a historical perspective and within the context of current sciences and their epistemological approaches. We engage in philosophical and historical research influenced by recent general trends and investigate natural sciences within broad cultural context, using various methodological approaches and plurality of perspectives offered by current social sciences and humanities. Our main perspective tends to be historical: we follow paradigm shifts in various sciences and development of scientific rationality as a whole in older history of European culture (in antiquity, Renaissance, and Early Modern Era), its forms and problems in the Modern Era in connection with social development, the role of theories, technologies, ideologies, but also their institutional form. Our approach to the history of science in the narrower sense tends to rely on current concepts from the history of concepts, history of ideas, and intellectual history.

Our department offers one master’s degree programme (Theoretical and Evolutionary Biology) and two PhD programmes (Philosophy and History of Sciences; Theoretical and Evolutionary Biology).
