My research interests include ecology, evolution and diversity of crustaceans and other invertebrates, particularly water fleas of the genus Daphnia, freshwater crayfish and gammarid amphipods. Furthermore, I am interested in biological invasions in freshwaters, with one of the key study systems being the pathogen of crayfish plague and its hosts. I also collaborate with my wife on the research of behavioural ecology of songbirds, and with colleagues from the Department of Zoology on diversity of land snails.

I teach several courses focusing mostly on aquatic ecology, including a field excursion focusing on marine fauna of the Mediterranean. Most of these are in Czech but a basic course of invasion biology is taught in English every year in the winter semester, and Crustacean Biology and Diversity and Zooplankton Ecology approximately once in two years depending on the students’ interest.

Within my research, I collaborate with a wide range of colleagues across and beyond Europe. We regularly welcome foreign visiting students for internships. If you are interested in getting involved, feel free to contact me.
