Renovation of server hardware and software updates

There is a time to update hardware of our departmental server. It will give us better performance. We will exchange hard drives for 2x2 TB to double capacity for users' data and 2x480 GB SSD for better performance. We will also update server operating system.

The server has a lot of data (currently about 700 GB) - copy them out and back will take plenty of time. So that even just hardware exchange of disks and installation of new system will be quick (in order of hours), not all data will be accessible immediately after it. We will be rewarded by higher performance (variable for various applications) and by higher capacity.

Both pairs of disks (2 TB HDD and 480 GB SSD will be mirrored (RAID1) for higher performance and data security. Data are backed up on departmental NAS and data storage of CESNET. We will update operating system to openSUSE Leap 42.1. Apache web server will stay in version 2.4, PHP in version 5.6, databases MariaDB (binary compatible with MySQL) in version 10 and PostgreSQL also stays in version 9.3. So that web applications should not be influenced. Some of the web applications will be moved to SSD and if needed, changes will be discussed individually. Main change will be usage of file systems Btrfs and XFS which allow creation of snapshots (and so that easy return into past state of settings; Btrfs) and better administration of user permissions (XFS).

We will offer to some users having a lot of data on the server (not including webs) move of those data into CESNET data storage and/or ownCloud, because they offer higher capacity and faster connection being ideal place for backups. Those things will be discussed individually.

In case of questions contact administrator.
