Phytoliths are mostly formed by groundwater silica carried upwards in a plant’s vascular system and consequently accumulated in different parts of the plant. After the plant’s death, the phytoliths shaped in specific morphotypes are released into the soil or stored in archaeological context. Phytolith assemblages can therefore provide information on the previous vegetation cover or i.e. human subsitence strategies. We are happy to invite you to attendcourse of phytolith analysis. The lecture (April 27th, 6 p.m., Department of Botany, Benátská 2, Praha 2) will be about potential of the phytolith analysis in archaeobotany and palaeoecology. And practical seminar (April 28th, 9 a.m., Institute of Archaeology, Letenská 4, Praha 1) will focus on field and laboratory methods and data interpretation.
