The lecture will provide a brief overview of causes and consequences of the extraordinary genome size variation in higher plants, with the main focus on contribution of repetitive DNA sequences to this variation. Novel sequencing platforms and bioinformatics approaches for investigating genomic abundance and sequence diversity of repetitive DNA will be discussed.
