Lipids in pollen-different and making a difference

Pollen grains are unique in many respects. This includes their lipid composition and the role lipids play in polar tip growth.
One example are sterols, which undergo strong changes in composition during pollen development and pollen tube growth. Glycerophospholipids are important for polar tip growth as signaling molecules. Neutral lipids stored in lipid droplets on the other hand could be important as both a sink and a source.
