Membrane traffic in the plant root

Dr. Alex Jones

(Life Sciences, University of Warwick)

Plant cells can adopt many specialised shapes such as jig-saw epidermal cells and branching trichomes on the leaf surface. Cell shape is an important determinant of function and membrane trafficking plays a crucial role in the delivery of lipids and cargo to specific areas to create - or restrict - growth. Plants share many conserved mechanisms for regulating membrane trafficking with animal cells. However, there are substantial differences in endomembrane compartments and diversification in the proteins involved. I will discuss some of the key regulatory proteins (RABs) involved in determining membrane targeting to specific destinations.
