we have begun to be asked to also include here
information about competitions
of graphic art in general, not
exclusively oriented just to bookplates, we have expanded
our page.
The Directory of Competitions is arranged in order of the closing date for application. Those with the nearest closing dates are at the top of the directory.
If not possible to do it better, only the name and title of each competition are listed, together with basic information and the contact addresses of the organizers. In this case, please, contact the organizers directly to obtain the "rules", "instructions", "status" and more detailed information.
Considering the fact that the organizers of some competitions often postpone their deadlines without informing us, information about competitions remain posted here for a while after the listed deadlines

Jan Brito
Born in Brittany. Settled in Flanders. Rival print maker of Gutenberg.
Between 1415 and 1420, Johannes Brulelou is born in Pipriac, Brittany. He is to become Jan Brito, print maker settled in Flanders. Bruges will regard him as the inventor of typography.
A Pipriac legend, in Brittany, tells that the young Jan Brulelou engraved his own initials on an oak piece, until one day the wooden piece fell into an ink container his mother was making for monks. After having been painfully recovered it from the hot ink, the oak piece fell on a white sheet... Reproducing his initials the other way round!... Thus started Jan Brito's vocation as a print maker.
After a passage in Angers, Jan Brito immigrates to Flanders in 1437, becomes Master of Writing in Tournai in 1446, and arrives in Bruges between 1448 and 1454.
Important relationships between ducal families of Brittany and Flanders, as well as an easy access to Bruges quays for Britannic ships all make this destination both natural and logical for a young ambitious copyist. His name will get known as Bortoen in Flemish, Britoen or Briton, and finally Brito, an obvious nickname from 1454 for a Britannic immigrant. To change one's name in a way that reminded one's origins, as one changed country was a common phenomena in this 15th century where artists travelled much through Europe.
Jan Brito dies in Bruges in 1484 (the year in which printing works appear in Brittany!).
A shop bearing his name will be created at the foot of Bruges' cathedral and will exist until the late 18th century, and also a fresco is dedicated to him in the main room of the town hall in Bruges.
Just as Avignon (France) with Prokop Waldvogel, Feltre (Italy) with Panfilo Castaldi and Haarlem (Holland) with Laurens Coster, Bruges is involved, in the 18th century with Jan Brito, to dispute to Mayence (Germany) the invention of typography, attributed to Johannes Gutenberg.
However, printing works only seems to begin in Bruges in 1472, some fifteen years after the first dated book in Mayence. The debate will have shown us Jan Brito's exemplary journey: one of the European pioneers of typography, self-taught, building himself his powerful press, without any apprenticeship with a master, and printing himself his own verses:
"See with what precision, what care, what elegance this printing is done by the bourgeois of Bruges Jan Brito, without anybody to have taught him his wonderful art and his instruments which are worth as much admiration."
A few works by Jan Brito have reached us and reveal a will for popularising knowledge and culture through editions, often bilingual, of great poets. This showed his humanistic wit, but also his boldness as he took risks in printing a text of politic propaganda, against Louis XI 's expansion strategy, commanded by Maximilien d'Autriche, ex-husband of Anne de Bretagne, in this era where the prosperous Brittany is much coveted by English and French sovereigns!
An interesting coincidence is the fact that the first print making workshop starts in Brittany the very year of Jan Brito's death, using the same letters as Bruges, whereas their Parisian fellows used letters of German shapes!
Jan Brito would maybe be telling us today:
"Do not tell my mother I invented printing in Bruges, she thinks it's Gutenberg! "
And in such a period as nowadays, dominated by internet and modern technology.... What would Jan Brito invent?
